MALTA

Malta, officially the Republic of Malta, is a Southern European island country comprising an archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. It lies 80km south of Italy, 284km east of Tunisia, and 333km north of Libya. The country covers just over 316km2, with a population of just under 450,000, making it one of the world's smallest and most densely populated countries. The capital of Malta is Valletta, which at 0.8 km2, is the smallest national capital in the European Union. Malta has two official languages: Maltese and English.Malta's location has historically given it great strategic importance as a naval base, and a succession of powers, including the Phoenicians, Romans, Moors, Normans, Sicilians, Spanish, Knights of St. John, French and British, have ruled the islands.

The Maltese Government 2013–2017 was the current Government of Malta from 11 March 2013 till 1 May 2017. The Maltese government is elected through a General Election for a five-year term (projected dissolution was 10 March 2018). The Head of Government is Joseph Muscat. On 1st May 2017, whilst speaking during a Labour Party mass meeting, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat announced a snap general election for June 3 2017, a year before the end of his term.

His father John Schembri has been occupying the office of Mayor of Luqa since 2001. Silvio is married to lawyer Deandra Schembri from Qormi whom he wed in July 2012. As an economist, Farrugia worked as an Advisor to the Maltese Delegation in the Committee of the Regions and later on as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Malta Freeport Corporation Farrugia served in a number of positions in the Labour Party, mainly as an elected member of the Administrative Council and National Executive Committee of the Malta Labour Party and founder of the Labour Party think-tank Fondazzjoni IDEAT.
